This is the first complete STI model of the 2nd generation Impreza WRX. Based on the lightest model in the series, Subaru’s specialist motor sports arm ‘Subaru Tecnica International’ (STI) completed a total tune of the STI typeRA specC. With a limited release of 400 units in 2002, the S202 was characterized by its uncompromising focus on agility. Weight was further reduced with forged aluminum wheels and a lightweight titanium muffler, while rear suspension arms featured built-in pillow ball bushes (a significant innovation in a production car at the time) to deliver control that was both sharp and linear. The lighter body combined with a 2-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder turbo engine that uséd STI’s ball bearing turbine and dedicated ECU to increase output to 320ps without compromising driving control. Other features included a special slit brake rotor that enhanced braking power, and a dry carbon rear wing with a two-stage angle adjustment. Performance of the S202 was refined to the point of perfection and is the model that became the foundation on which future STI complete cars were built on.
