The Solido company was founded in 1932 by a Frenchman, Ferdinand de Vazeilles, who was then the director of a foundry in Nanterre. He revolutionised the manufacture of toy cars. At that time, toys were mostly made of sheet metal, but Ferdinand had the idea of using zamak (a zinc alloy injected under pressure into a mould). The name Solido, which quickly stuck, reflected the strength of the toys, while being easy to remember.
After the Second war, Ferdinandâs son, Jean, joined the business, beginning a period of growth and development. Solidoâs â100 Seriesâ was launched at the end of the 1950s, and the 1960s saw the development of many auto sports models. Greater diversification came in the 1970s, with the range of models expanding to include trucks, construction vehicles, police and fire service vehicles and even helicopters.
In 1981, Emile Veron (founder of Norev and creator of Majorette, two rival model makers) took over the management of Solido, and their success continued.
In the 2000s, Solido was bought by toy company Smoby, which was later acquired by the Simba-Dickie Group, one of Germanyâs biggest toy manufacturers, who retained Solido as a separate brand name and brought new investment, ensuring the continued success of Solido today.
